HOW TO FIND GOD’S WILL
When boats are navigating within a channel, range markers have been erected to help them locate the center of the channel. When you steer a course that keeps the two range markers lined up vertically that indicates that you are in the center of the channel. Navigating through life presents a number of unique challenges, but we also have range markers to keep us from making a shipwreck of our lives. God wants the best for you and He has designed a number of range markers to keep you in the center of His will. The Apostle Paul gives this solemn warning,
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:17)
This command implies that you can know His will for your life. The word “foolish” literally means without reason or reflection. This is a picture of people mindlessly going through life without any consideration of God’s will for their lives. How can you know God’s will life for your life? Let’s take a look some of the range markers that God has provided.
God’s word, the Bible, provides insight, wisdom, and guidance to live an abundant life. The Psalmist wrote,
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
The Bible provides principles for living, but it does not address every situation that you may encounter. We also need the counsel of godly friends. These are people who know God and have the ability to tell us not necessarily what we want to hear, but what we need to hear,
Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22)
Who are the people in your life who can tell you what you need to hear? God has also given us the opportunity to commune directly with Him through prayer. We must remember that prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue. We must be still and listen for the whisper of the Holy Spirit,
Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know. (Jeremiah 33:3)
Finally, you must be aware of the circumstances in your life. God is sovereign and the events in your life occur for a purpose. The Bible provides a comforting perspective,
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
You will discover that God closes doors and He open doors and it is our responsibility to discern His leading. When the range markers are in alignment, then you can move forward with confidence. The will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot keep you. You must realize that to know God’s will is life’s greatest treasure, and to do God’s will is life’s greatest pleasure.
